Something old, something new, something
borrowed, something blue . . . . .
Everyone knows this old wedding rhyme but not many are aware of the last line which goes and a silver sixpence in your shoe.
Surprisingly a lot of modern brides who normally are not of a superstitious nature do try to adhere to at least the old, new, borrowed and blue part of the rhyme.
Something Old
This refers to the bride's old life and her family. Though she is leaving them behind by wearing some thing old she is showing that she still remembers them.
Something New
Wearing something new represents hopefully the success and good fortune in the bride's new life.
Something Borrowed
Borrowing an item worn already worn by a happy bride is believed to pass on the good luck.
Something Blue
Blue is a sign of purity.This follows a long tradition of the bride being pure on the day of her wedding and the commitment to her future husband.
A Silver Sixpence
Though a bit uncomfortable this represents wealth, not just financial wealth but spiritual wealth, happiness and good luck throughout their married life.
Bridal Bouquet
The bride's bouquet come from a very old tradition of flowers bringing good fortune.
The throwing of the bouquet is a way of spreading the bride's good fortune and luck. Whoever catches it will be blessed with good luck and will be the next to marry.
